Portrait of D

Angela Galvan

A painterly rendition of a figure with their arms up, obscuring their face. Tattoos lace their arms and chest.

My paintings are mostly oils on canvas, with very detailed and almost invisible brush strokes. I'm inspired by the late Titian, Caravaggio's light and the concept of kitsch of Odd Nerdrum. The style is photorealistic but I don't merely copy reality, I try instead to turn it into my aesthetic ideal. My subjects are portraits of young meditating guys often slightly erotic - or explicitly erotic. As a female artist I believe the role of women in the history of art has been reduced to that of models and that for too long painting has been dominated by a patriarchal structure. So my intent is to break this convention and depict guys as erotic subjects and sources of inspiration.
